Indicated in women for induction of ovulation and pregnancy in infertile women who do not ovulate regularly. Also may be used to stimulate the development of multiple follicles in patients who ovulate regularly undergoing in-vitro fertilization. Successful release of the ova usually requires administration of a HCG product.
Administered by intramuscular injection often in the buttocks or thigh. Dissolve the powder with 1 ml of sterile normal saline for injection. Aim the solution towards the side of the vial and not directly into the powder. Gently rotate between your hands to mix. Do not shake the vial. Inject immediately using 3ml 25G 1 ½ inch needled syringe (#309582).
Common side effects are ovarian enlargement, ovarian cysts, swelling, irritation, ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, and pain at the injection site. Headache, abdominal pain, bloating, allergic reactions, gastrointestinal symptoms, and ectopic pregnancies may also occur. Monitoring by blood work and ultrasound reduce the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome and also show the need for adjustments in treatment, during the cycle.
