Ovidrel® is a recombinant form of HCG used in patients who are undergoing assisted reproductive technologies – and who have undergone pituitary desensitization with either a GNRH agonist or a GNRH antagonist. Ovidrel® is the final step in inducing ovulation and inducing the required luteinizing hormone surge.
Ovidrel® should be reconsititued with 1mL of sterile water for injection and given as a subcutaneous injection once follicular development has been deemed adequate. Common adverse effects associated with Ovidrel® include injection site irritation, gastrointestinal upset, dizziness, fever, and headache. Rare but serious reported side effects include vaginal hemorrhage, ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, and cardiac arrhythmia. Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to other HCG products should not use Ovidrel®. Caution should be exercised when using Ovidrel® in patients with epilepsy, migraine, asthma, or cardiac/renal disease. May be stored refrigerated or at room temperature. Use immediately following reconstitution – discard any unused product.
